General Description of Program Services

The Seminole Center for Co-Occurring Disorders provides the opportunity for Individuals with both a serious mental illness and substance abuse disorder, to learn how to effectively cope with and manage psychiatric symptoms while also reducing the frequency and severity of substance abuse. The SCCD goal is and has been to incorporate evidence-based practices in order to provide concurrent and coordinated care to those persons with co-occurring disorders.

Initial Assessment

All potential admissions to Seminole Community Mental Health Center for either psychiatric or substance abuse are screened for a co-occurring disorder.
Assessments use self-reporting instruments, collateral information from family, primary health care providers, friends and when indicated, law enforcement, attorneys, and child protection investigators.
Assessments are comprehensive in nature and address issues of trauma, past psychiatric history and compliance, family support, medical conditions, psycho-social stressors, safety, legal issues, potential for sexually transmitted diseases and other important factors associated with substance abuse.
Emphasis is placed on those individuals, which may have special needs or issues such as women/men with children who may be negatively affected by their parents' co-occurring disorder.

Multidisciplinary Treatment Team

Weekly clinical case staffing meeting assesses each participant's progress and reviews clinical needs and level of care.
The client-centered goals are primary consideration for treatment team.
The team in decision-making process utilizes Mueser's Stages of Treatment.
ASAM Criteria utilized for consideration of level of care.

Treatment Methods

Evidence-based supported treatment methods and interventions are delivered in a client-centered context. All methods have been demonstrated in multiple and various research studies. Some methods include:

Treatment Services

All staff of SCCD/SCMHC assists the clients in achieving goals that they have identified and find meaningful. Clients are provided with a full continuum of services including:

Intensive inpatient treatment
Outreach to families and significant others
Case management
Outpatient relapse prevention groups
Enhanced medication management
Job Store and Vocational Skills Building
Intensive Outpatient Treatment (Turning Point / Sedona)
Inpatient Crisis services
Other therapeutic groups and classes

Important Program Elements

Individuals with co-Occurring disorders may enter into SCMHC through any "door" or Program.

Treatment is expected to long-term as clients move through different stages of

engagement and harm reduction that eventually lead to long-term abstinence that includes psychiatric stability and social support.

Discharge plans include follow-up and relapse prevention group meetings.

Staff is cross-trained in mental health and substance abuse issues.

Emphasis is placed on family education and support.
